Avertissement : C'est un signal d'annonce précédant un signal d'arrêt, comme un "carré" ou un sémaphore. Il peut se présenter soit sous la forme d'un feu (signalisation lumineuse), soit sous la forme d'un losange jaune, associé à un feu jaune (pour la signalisation de nuit).

L'avertissement commande au conducteur d'être en mesure de s'arrêter avant le prochain signal d'arrêt fermé (carré ou sémaphore).

Le sémaphore est un signal ferroviaire utilisé à la SNCF pour l'espacement des trains. 

En signalisation lumineuse, le sémaphore fermé est présenté sous forme d'un feu rouge fixe si fermeture et sous forme d'un feu vert si ouverture.

En signalisation mécanique, de jour, s'il est fermé, il est présenté sous forme d'une aile rouge, étendue horizontalement et de nuit, par un feu rouge. Si il est ouvert, l'aile rouge est penchée à 45 ° environ et de nuit, c'est un feu vert qui est présenté.

Signalisation anglaise mécanique/Mechanical English signaling.

Stop signal : signal qui s'applique directement au conducteur du train. L'aile est rectangulaire,  peinte en rouge avec une bande blanche. Quand l'aile est dans la position horizontale, le signal impose l'arrêt (stop), et quand l'aile est penchée ou élevée, le signal est ouvert (proceed). Le feu rouge et le feu vert sont utilisés la nuit ou en cas de brouillard.

Stop signal: A signal that applies directly to the train driver. The wing is rectangular, painted red with a white stripe. When the wing is in a horizontal position, the signal indicates a stop, and when the wing is tilted or raised, the signal indicates an open (proceed). The red and green lights are used at night or in fog.

En signalisation lumineuse, le disque est présenté sous forme d'un feu jaune et d'un feu rouge, alignés verticalement ou horizontalement.

En signalisation mécanique, il est présenté sous forme d'une cocarde (tableau) ronde rouge, associé, pour une observation de nuit, à un feu rouge et un feu jaune sur une ligne horizontale ou verticale.

Le disque impose au conducteur du train la marche à vue et l’arrêt avant le premier appareil de voie ou avant le poste. Cette limite d’arrêt peut être matérialisée par un guidon d’arrêt, un signal d’arrêt à main ou une pancarte.

Dans la signalisation ferroviaire, il faut distinguer deux familles, la signalisation lumineuse et la signalisation mécanique. La première se présente sous forme de signaux électriques de couleurs (Rouge, orange, vert, blanc, violet). La signalisation mécanique est composée de panneaux métalliques orientables ou fixes, parfois accompagnés de signaux lumineux pour leur visibilité la nuit.

Railway signalling is divided into two categories: light signals and mechanical signals. Light signals take the form of coloured electrical signals (red, orange, green, white and violet). Mechanical signalling is made up of adjustable or fixed metal panels, sometimes accompanied by light signals to make them visible at night.

En signalisation lumineuse, le carré violet (Cv) est présenté sous forme d'un feu violet. En signalisation mécanique, il est présenté sous forme d'une cocarde (tableau) violette. Équivalent au carré, ce signal est en général installé sur les voies de service. De même que le carré, le carré violet commande l'arrêt.
