La gare actuelle date de 1883 et fut le premier bâtiment de Strasbourg éclairé à l'électricité.
L'arrivée du TGV-Est donne lieu a de nouveaux travaux d'architecture par l'installation d'une verrière (surnommée le Zeppelin) recouvrant entièrement la façade historique.
