Construit en 1936-1937 à Reichshoffen (Bas-Rhin) dans les usines De Dietrich, l’autorail X 42511 n’est pas un train comme les autres car au cours de son histoire, il fut destiné aux voyages de la Présidence de la République

Il a d’abord circulé sur le réseau de l’État pour assurer le transport des voyageurs. Il a ensuite été transformé en autorail de commandement avec un nouvel aménagement intérieur : une partie cuisine avec salle à manger pour 12 personnes, une chambre-bureau à un lit, trois cabines couchettes simple et une cabine couchettes double pour le personnel de conduite ou d’accompagnement.

Puis il sert pour des voyages présidentiels ou officiels. L'intérieur est spartiate : une salle de réunion et de travail, une chambre pour le Président et une petite pièce, en fait un local pour les gendarmes chargés de sa sécurité.

Radié en 1974, il est racheté par la firme Coca-Cola pour servir de salon VIP où recevoir des clients. Il est alors  repeint aux couleurs de la marque du célèbre soda, rouge et blanc. Par la suite, l’entreprise en a fait don à la Cité du train en 1996. En 2003, l’autorail est exposé à Laon dans l’Aisne, dans la cour d'une entreprise fabricant des systèmes de chauffage.

L’autorail a été rapatrié à Mulhouse, le 8 janvier dernier à la Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF, son propriétaire.

Built in 1936-1937 in Reichshoffen (Bas-Rhin) in the De Dietrich factories, the X 42511 railcar is not a train like the others because during its history, it was intended for the trips of the Presidency of the Republic.

At first, it ran on the State network to carry passengers. It was then transformed into a command railcar with a new interior layout: a kitchen and dining area for 12 people, a single bedroom-office, three single sleeper cabins and a double sleeper cabin for the driving or accompanying staff.

It was then used for presidential and official trips. The interior was spartan: a meeting and work room, a bedroom for the President and a small room for the gendarmes responsible for his security.

Closed down in 1974, it was bought by the Coca-Cola company to be used as a VIP lounge for clients. It was then repainted in the colours of the famous soda brand, red and white. The company subsequently donated it to the Cité du Train in 1996. In 2003, the railcar was exhibited in Laon in the Aisne region, in the yard of a company that manufactures heating systems.

The railcar was repatriated to Mulhouse on 8 January this year to the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF, its owner.
