Au cours de mon adolescence, alors lycéen, j'ai pu effectuer deux voyages en Allemagne, organisés dans le cadre d'échanges organisés par la municipalité de ma ville de naissance.
During my teenage years, as a high school student, I was able to make two trips to Germany, organized as part of exchanges organized by the municipality of my city of birth.
Mon premier voyage eut lieu à Hannovre, ville de Basse-Saxe, où je suis arrivé en train en partant de la gare de Saint-Quentin (Picardie/Aisne),par le train Paris à Berlin, via Charleroi (Belgique) et Cologne (Allemagne). Je garde de ce voyage ferroviaire de nuit, peu de souvenirs si ce n'est la traversée au petit matin sur un pout métallique avec vue sur la cathédrale de Cologne. Et de Hannovre, si ce n'est les visites guidées en ville et l'image de la mairie.Je fus néanmoins très impressionné par une visite dans le Harz, y découvrant le "rideau de fer", alors frontière entre les deux Allemagne.
My first trip took place in Hanover, a city in Lower Saxony, where I arrived by train from Saint-Quentin station (Picardie/Aisne), by train from Paris to Berlin, via Charleroi (Belgium) and Cologne (Germany). I remember this train journey by night, but few memories except for the early morning crossing on a metal track overlooking Cologne Cathedral. And from Hanover, except for the guided tours in the city and the image of the town hall. Nevertheless, I was very impressed by a visit to the Harz, where I discovered the "Iron Curtain", then the border between the two Germans.

Mon deuxième voyage eut lieu l'année suivante à Soltau , en Basse-Saxe , au cœur de la Lande de Lunebourg. La ville de Soltau était jumelée avec ma ville natale de Laon et chaque année des échanges de jeunes gens avaient lieu entre chacune des deux villes.
My second trip took place the following year in Soltau, in Lower Saxony, in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath. The city of Soltau was twinned with my hometown of Laon and every year exchanges of young people took place between each of the two cities.

Mon troisième et dernier voyage ferroviaire en Allemagne eut lieu plusieurs dizaines d'années plus tard, accompagnant des lycéens du concours de la Résistance jusqu'à Weimar pour une semaine. Voyage de Paris-Est à Francfort, puis en bus jusqu'aux environs de Weimar. Nous sommes allés plusieurs fois sur le camp de déportation-concentration de Buchenwald, une épreuve assez dure pour le moral de ces jeunes lycéens.
My third and last railway trip to Germany took place several decades later, accompanying high school students from the Resistance competition to Weimar for a week. Travel from Paris-Est to Frankfurt, then by bus to the vicinity of Weimar. We went several times to the deportation-concentration camp of Buchenwald, a rather hard test for the morale of these young high school students.
